Boehringer Ingelheim fuels gene therapy startup focused on eye diseases
Another large drugmaker has boosted its stake in the comeback field of gene therapy. Boehringer Ingelheim Venture Fund, the VC unit of the Germany-based pharma group, has injected an undisclosed amount of capital into Eyevensys, which uses electro-transfer in a gene therapy approach to treat ocular diseases.
Boehringer has bet on the startup amid growing interest from big-named drugmakers in the previously shunned gene therapy field. This month Novartis’ ($NVS) venture fund joined VC firms in a $41 million funding round for Paris-based GenSight Biologics, which plans to replace genes to treat rare eye diseases. And last month Celgene ($CELG) sealed partnerships with investigators at Baylor and the gene-therapy startup bluebird bio to develop cancer immunotherapies.
The growing interest follows successful experiments from bluebird and others that have shown safety and efficacy of gene therapies in humans in recent years, renewing faith in a field that suffered from previous safety disasters in trials.
Founded in 2009, Eyevensys hopes to attract more new investors after securing support from BI in its second-round financing, with plans to wrap up the fundraising by the end of June with help from previous backers Innobio, CDC Enterprises, Inserm Transfer Initiative and CapDecisif Management. In addition to money, Boehringer is contributing guidance; the drugmaker’s head of non-clinical research and development Dr. Michel Pairet has joined the board of directors at the startup.

Irish biopharma firm secures FDA orphan drug status for gene therapy product
(From left) Dr Paul McKenna of Genable Technologies; Ena Prosser, partner, Fountain Healthcare Partners; and Prof Jane Farrar of Genable Technologies
Dublin biopharmaceutical company Genable Technologies has been granted orphan drug designation from the Federal Drug Administration (FDA) in the US for its gene therapy product GT308 that it is developing to treat the eye disease retinitis pigmentosa.
The move from the FDA is being regarded by the company as a significant milestone, as it will provide Genable Technologies with seven years’ market exclusivity once GT308 has secured regulatory approval.
Genable has grown from the work of Prof Jane Farrar, Dr Paul Kenna and Prof Peter Humphries at Trinity College Dublin (TCD). In 2011, the company secured €5m in financing from Fountain Healthcare Partners. Delta Partners is already an investor in the company.
Speaking this afternoon, Genable’s managing director Prof Alan Boyd said there is currently no treatment for retinitis pigmentosa.
“It’s an inherited, genetic disease. In Ireland, there are about 200 families with this condition. It’s related to the rhodopsin in your eye. Rhodopsin is a chemical that senses light. The rhodopsin is a chemical change that happens when light hits the rhodopsin molecule. That generates an electric signal which goes to the brain and you can see,” he explained.

Modern magnetic therapy
Magnetic therapy is a form of therapy that has been used for many years for a variety of different purposes, including pain relief, prevention of aging and the relief of a range of symptoms from a range of ailments. The problems that the therapy helped to alleviate are still present in the modern world, therefore it is logical that the method used to ease these problems before can still be used today. There are many products available today which can perform this magnetic therapy. Each group of products has a different design and can help with diverse problems, normally in the area around the place where the product is worn. Magnetic therapy has general benefits that most products will provide you with in addition to the specialized benefits that are received from the therapy.
The general benefits of magnetic therapy include enlarging the blood vessels, thereby increasing the rate of circulation within your body; this in turn helps to increase the level of oxygen in your blood and also helps to flush out toxins that have accumulated. These are believed to be the root causes of the general pain relief that can occur once you start using these products.
There are many categories of products which can perform the magnetic therapy, including magnetic jewelry and magnetic wraps, magnetic car seats and magnetic insoles, pulsed magnets as well as magnets for water and magnets for health and beauty. Within these general groupings are many smaller groups of products which are normally grouped by what the product is and whereabouts on the body it is placed. Examples of this are back wraps within the magnetic wrap category and necklaces within the magnetic jewelry category.

5 Magnetic Therapy videos that blow my mind
Here is a series of videos that can create more interest in magnetic therapy. They demonstrate the unique power that you will not find with any other substance on earth. I hope to inspire you to pursue magnetic therapy in your own en devours and be as excited about the possibilities as I am.
1. Eddy effect:
Here you will see that the power of neodymium magnets can grab and move the can without touching it. He has very powerful magnets, weak ones will have a weaker response. The effect is something you would find similar to a boat oar being rowed against the water. There is a swirl of energy around the oar and the stronger the row, the bigger the swirl.
When you place the magnets close to the body, you have fluids such as blood, lymph, nerve signals and other fluids that cross the magnet near the skin. They all get affected by the effect and get balanced evenly. If you are extra excited or nervous, the eddy effect will slow down the flow of energy to allow for a faster way to calm down.
if you are a little tired, the magnetic energy can free up any stuck energy at key point. If you study Acupuncture, you learn the points to touch that can release trapped energy. There is a spot suggested below the kneecap for hikers to use Acupressure.
In this video about eddy currents, they talk about how the eddy current can increase heat as more energy is created in that very spot. It gives a little history about the discovery and some applications. Read the comments below, there are some factual challenges made, but mostly, people are supportive of this video.
This video shows how the eddy current slows the magnet down. When magnets are placed on the body, you can slow nervousness down to give a nice calming effect. Many people buy magnet mattresses to sleep on. They lay on the magnets and this gives a calming effect unlike any other kind of effect to sleep peacefully to. I was sleeping on a large magnetic area for a while and felt the effects personally. Ofcourse, I was suffering a lot with a health condition and may have experienced a greater turn around in health than someone who is already healthy at the start.
Here is another demonstration of a magnet in a tube. The eddy effect is a little stronger because it is completely surrounded. You can see clearly that magnets effect and are effected by other objects that are in motion. They need something to influence, but that have their own kind of energy to transfer on a constant basis. Also, a little heat is generated as the magnet falls from gravity.
2. Levitating frog:
Here is a vid that shows the powers that magnets can have against gravity. The kind of magnetic energy used requires a power source and is very powerful. I believe the video tries to explain the process a little better in then description. As you can see, the vid is 7 years old so far. The have levitated other objects since then, such as strawberries:

Magnetic therapy could improve schizophrenics’ memory
Stimulating the brains of schizophrenics with magnetic fields could help improve their memory, according to a study from the University of Toronto.
The researchers used a technique called repetitive transcranial magnetic stimultion (rTMS), which appears to allow the brain to ‘rewire’ itself and change the way certain neural structures operate.
Memory is one of several brain functions that is affected by schizophrenia, and is associated with some of the other impairments experienced by sufferers, such as difficulty with speaking and attention. There has been some work on using computer games to ‘exercise’ the affected parts of the brain, but rTMS represents a more direct method of affecting the nerve structures inside the brain.

rTMS involves applying a moving magnetic field to the patient’s head
First developed in the UK in the 1980s, transcranial magnetic stimulation uses a moving magnetic field applied to the patient’s head to induce nerve impulses. Dending on which part of the brain the magnetic field is applied to, it’s been found to induce effects such as involuntary movement and the hallucination of flashes of light. In medicine, its early uses involve testing the activity of brain circuits to diagnose problems affecting motor functions, such as stroke, multiple sclerosis and motor neurone diseases.
More recently, psychologists have started to investigate its effect on the parts of the brain involved in cognition. In 2008, the FDA approved rTMS for non-drug responsive depression, and researchers have found that using the technique repeatedly seems to have a long-term effect on the brain.
